HUBLI: Implementation of dress code has been a hot topic for discussion at colleges in the region, especially in Hubli-Dharwad. Many colleges in the twin cities are still pondering over the issue. However, some colleges have introduced dress code, while the others are yet to follow suit.
When `The Times of India' asked the first-year degree students of SK Arts College as to whether dress code should be imposed or not, most of them said "dress code is a must in the present-day education system".

Sharing his view, Mahantesh Badettinavar said the implementation of dress code is essential on campuses. "It will give a sense of equality among all students. It also helps maintain unity and simplicity, otherwise students will wear different dress which some times spoil the college environment."
Endorsing similar views, P M Bakale said: "Yes, dress code has to be implemented in all colleges to ensure unity among the students. In its absence, the students, particularly those from rich families, will wear colourful and costly clothes, which may leave poor students with inferiority complex. It may also make the latter mingle less with other students. But if there is dress code, all of them will wear similar dress, leaving no room for complex and discrimination. Students should follow the norms imposed by their colleges."
Sanjeev Nashipudi begs to differ when he says the issue of dress code is best left to the college authorities. "Dress code should be implemented in colleges having co-education system (wherein both boys and girls study together). Dress code, while establishing equality among the students, make them feel like members of the same family. They should strictly follow the dress code if it's implemented," he added.
Saying that students of colleges are adhering to the dress code implemented by their colleges, Soundarya Lonkar said: "Degree colleges must implement the dress code as it will benefit students. Those coming from rural areas can't afford other (read colourful) clothes," she added.

"The twin cities are growing rapidly. To avoid western dress culture making its way into their campuses, dress code should be a must in all colleges," said Sheela Sungar.
"Dress code helps inculcate disciplines among the students. Girls wearing provocative dress may make boys indulge in incidents like eve-teasing. Dress code will play a vital role in maintaining conducive atmosphere on campuses. After implementing the dress code, the college authorities should take stern action against students who fail to fall in line," said Y C Meti.
